Description

This dictionary was prepared by Marion Hardacre, a missionary who worked with the Melanesian Mission at Lamalanga on North Pentecost from 1906 till 1929.Bonnemaison (in 'Arts of Vanuatu', page 250) mentions that Hardacre was an ‘Anglican missionary based at Laone who collected (on paper) Raga uliuli [sand drawings] for Raymond Firth and A.C. Haddon’. Her work in Raga and how she 'gave herself heart and soul to the people of Raga' is mentioned in 'Lord of the Southern Isles' (C.E. Fox, 1958:110-111).
