architect and botanist, was born Edinburgh 14 May 1839. Died Melbourne 14 May [sic] 1920. Arrived in Tasmania in 1884 as a architectural draughtsman. Botany was his hobby … herbarium and papers lent to the National Herbarium in Victoria. Bastow advertised thus: 'Reporter on Design at the Vienna Exhibition. Author of “Practical Cabinet Maker”. Fourteen years as Sanitary Surveyor Manchester Corporation. Having had a thorough practical as well as professional training, is prepared to Design, Plan, and carry out Building or Furnishing in all its branches in Good Taste, Substantial, Workmanlike.
