Description

22U Yass W Goulburn - so named on October 18, 1824, by the explorer Hamilton Hume on his way overland to Port Philip - they camped on a small plain, and on the next day Hume sent one of his men to the top of a hill to report on the country beyond - on his return Hume asked him if the travelling was good and he replied "Ya-as-plains", which so amused Hume that he called the place "Yass" (cp Hume's Journal). Incidently the aboriginal name for the locality was Yarras, which means - running water. Ref: Stretch Ledger A9082
