Description

34E Ulmarra N E Grafton - Aboriginal meaning: a bend in the river. (see opposite) Ref: Stretch Ledger A9082 Note: when Surveyor W.C.B. Wilson was surveying the district he asked the King of the local tribe what he called the place. The King replied - Ulmarra signifying a bend in the river - another version is that the King gave his own name which sounded like Youlmahra. So Surveyor Wilson named it Almyra, (the nearest sounding name to Ulmarra or Youlmahra) a town in Greece where he fought in the war of Independence. See - Lanitya Lewadia Tucabia - Kremnos and Woodford.
