Description

20P Tichborne was named after the notorious Tichborne case of the 1860sin which a Wagga butcher named Thomas Castro claimed to be Sir Roger Tichborne, who had disappeared. The township of T. has no connection with the case except that in 1870 the miners gave it that name. Ref: Stretch Ledger A9082 Newspaper article: The old goldmining township of Tichborne, between Parkes and Forbes, will celebrate the eightieth anniversary of its school on April 1, 2 and 3. Tichborne was named after the notorious Tichborne case of the 1860s in which a Wagga butcher, who lived under the name of Thomas Castro, claimed to be Sir Roger Tichborne, who had disappered. A long-drawn-out legal case - the sensation of the 1860s - resulted in Castro being declared to be Arthur Orton, born in the East End of London, and he was sent to prison. The township of Tichborne has no connection with the case except that in 1870 the miners gave it that name - but it still enjoys a vicarious fame because of it. SMH 29/2/60
