30O Scratchley Fort Newcastle - named after Colonel Peter Scratchley (see opposite). Ref: Stretch Ledger A9082 Note: Fort Scratchley at Newcastle was named after Colonel Peter Scratchley Royal Engineers, who in 1874 was selected by Lord Carnarvon to advise on a scheme of defence for the Australian Ports, in association with Major-General Sir William Francis Drummond. Jervois, G.C.M.G., and at that time Chief Engineer Officer of the Colonies Originally it was named Hagstaff Hill then Signal Hill and then, when it was gazetted as a Military establishement on August 2, 1843 it was named Fortification Hill.
