Description

30N Raymond Terrace N Hexham - named after midshipman Raymond who in 1797 was sent by Lieut John Shortland up the Hunter River by boat. Ref: Stretch Ledger A9082 Note: Midshipman Raymond, who was sent up the Hunter River by Lieut John Shortland, remarked on the "terraced" appearance of the trees at the junction of the Hunter and William Rivers. The lovcality for some time was called - Raymond's Terraces. Possibly midshipman Raymond accompanied Colonel William Paterson in 1801 when Surveyor Barrallier mapped the Hunter River & the name was then officially recorded. In 1812 there was a Lieutenant Raymond at Raymond Terrace & Governor Macquarie may have named the place after him. could he have been the midshipman promoted?
