Biography
sketcher and military officer, was born in Bisley, Gloucestershire, on 8 December 1824. In June 1843 he became an ensign by purchase in the 51st Regiment of Light Infantry, and was promoted lieutenant in July 1845. Mansfield arrived at Hobart Town in May 1844 on board the Equestrian . A sketchbook of pencil drawings (ALMFA) contains views of Hobart Town, including several made in the vicinity of his quarters at the Old Wharf Barracks. Others depict views from the Anglesea Barracks and the Domain. A small collection of loose sketches with the book includes one by fellow officer William H. Kemp and at least two English views (Croydon Church and Rectory) that are not his work. Mansfield remained in Van Diemen’s Land until January 1847 then sailed with a detachment of his regiment for Madras on board the Java . Promoted captain in March 1853, he transferred to the 32nd Regiment in August (retaining his captain’s rank) and continued to serve in Madras until September.
