painter, was born and educated in Germany. He arrived at Melbourne on 17 December 1876 on board the Kent . Soon afterwards he was commissioned to paint 'The Apparition of the Virgin at Lourdes’ for St Ignatius, Richmond. In 1877 he was admitted as a member of the Victorian Academy of Arts, where he exhibited three paintings in 1878-79. In 1880 he was appointed first painting master at the Adelaide School of Design (later the South Australia School of Art). He became first curator of the National Gallery of South Australia in 1882. His oil on canvas In the Garden was offered for auction at Sotheby’s 'Fine Australian and European Paintings’, Melbourne, 28-29 April 1998, lot 209. This entry is a stub.
