Biography
professional photographer, son of George William Francis and Ann, née Hatt, was born in London. He accompanied his parents to South Australia in the Louisa Baillie in 1849. In 1863-68 Francis worked in partnership with H. Anson in Adelaide at the Photographic Institution, Rundle Street. He married Jessie Marian Withers on 12 October 1878, by which time he had his own studio in Adelaide. This continued until 1899. Stereocards and cartes-de-visite survive (Mortlock Library). William Augustus Francis died in Adelaide on 5 June 1918. His younger brother, Arthur, born in South Australia, also worked as a photographer (c. 1879-92). This entry is a stub.
