Jeweller in Perth and Boulder, Western Australia. He was born in Ireland, son of Frederick Scanlan, pensioner guard who arrived in 1864. He married Emily, the daughter of Anthony Fouchard, in 1881 when he returned from abroad. Scanlan may have been trained by Fouchard. He began with a small retail outlet and by 1893 was in Howick Street, Perth. He was in Wellington Street in 1899, Barrack Street in 1903 when he became a large wholesale manufacturer.
