Biography
illustrator, worked in Sydney. At the age of 17 he was special artist on the Australian Star (later the Sun ). He illustrated The Coloured Conquest by “Rata” (Thomas Richard Roydhouse) published by the NSW Bookstall Company in 1904. His pen and ink drawing, 'Tennis girl’, appeared in Lone Hand 7 (October 1910), 471. Having become known as a commercial artist in Australia, Jardine went to America in 1923 and became famous for his pen-and-ink drawings on scraper-board. He worked on Hearst’s Cosmopolitan Magazine and did illustrations for Good Housekeeping, The American Legion and Motor Magazine , as well as other magazine covers and commercial work. After returning to Australia for health reasons in 1928, he drew advertisements that appeared in the Bulletin, Home and other papers as well as posters. A book, The Art of Walter Jardine , was published in 1932. He also contributed (straight) illustrations to the Bulletin . This entry is a stub. You can help DAAO by submitting a biography.
