Biography
cartoonist, was born Sutton Forest NSW but left Australia aged 18 months. He became a well-known English cartoonist with work in Tatler, Sketch, London Opinion, Passing Show etc., especially Punch where he became known for his 'The Man Who…’ series of cartoons. The Art Gallery of Western Australia (958/0D65) has The Making of a Reformer n.d., acquired from the proprietors of Punch . Bateman revisited Australia in 1939, touring Fremantle, Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney (March-April 1939) with an exhibition of his work sent out from England. Cousin of sculptor Daphne Mayo .
