Biography
comic strip artist, was born in Rozelle, Sydney. Influenced by Alex Raymond’s Flash Gordon , he drew his first comic book Anthony Fury while working as a milkman. He sold it to ACP in 1942. Soon afterwards he illustrated stories by Frank Ashley for Frank Johnson Publications. Pitt had no art training and no opportunity to associate with other Johnson artists, like Unk White , Carl Lyon and Jim Russell . The comic strip ads he drew for Colgate Palmolive in 1945 led to a contract with Associated Newspapers for a science-fiction strip. A dispute over size led to him removing Silver Starr in November 1948 and he then went to work for John Fairfax’s new Sunday Herald , where in March 1949 he drew another sci-fi strip, Captain Power , with story by Gerry Brown. Then he developed Yarmak for Young’s Merchandising until 1952. He continued to work freelance until joining Cleveland Press in the early 1950s, where he created a series of Silver Starr comics. Etc.
