Biography
China painter, potter, watercolorist, printmaker and teacher Mary Livesey was born in York in October 1928. She married G. B. Livesey and had four children. She studied art as a mature student in Canberra at Canberra Technical College under Hector Gilliland and exhibited with the Canberra Society of Artists. Livesey exhibited in the 'Art Competition’ at Art Gallery of Western Australia in 1952. When they returned to Perth she enrolled at Perth and Claremont Technical Schools undertaking a Diploma in Art Studies majoring in printmaking which she completed in 1976. Livesey’s lecturers were Judy Chambers, Nola Farman, Hans Arkveldt and Jeff Jones. She taught adult education classes in ceramics and exhibited with the Western Australian Women’s Society of Fine Arts and Crafts. In 1968 and 1969 Livesey won the watercolour prize in the 'Guild of Undergraduates’ exhibition at University of Western Australia. She continued to study completing a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art at Western Australian Institute of Technology (Curtin University) in 1980. Here Livesey’s lecturers were Brian Blanchflower, Mac Betts and Doug Chambers. Her brightly painted work is inspired by a long time interest in colour and the work of the Fauves.
