Biography
Hilary’s father instructed him in the Dreaming stories as the family moved around the area south-west of Kintore where Hilary was born c.1940. Then the family walked in to Haasts Bluff and received rations of flour and tea, remaining in the area for a time before drifting back to the eastern fringes of Pintupi country. Back at Haasts Bluff later on, Hilary lived with Turkey Tolson 's family. After his initiation at Papunya, Hilary worked as a stockman dfor some years before returning to Papunya in the early ’70s. He recalled that Geoffrey Bardon had given him a few small boards to try out on, but not till after he moved to the newly established settlement of Kintore in the early ’80s did he paint regularly for Papunya Tula Artists. His paintings usually depict the Snake Dreaming south-west of Kintore in his traditional country. Writers: Johnson, Vivien Note: primary biographer Date written: 1994 Last updated: 2011
