Biography
Painter, born in Canberra, ACT in 1942. Between 1956 and 1960 Stuart was a student of John Brack at Melbourne Grammar. He then studied painting at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology between 1961 and 1962. Stuart has often travelled to Japan, studying and drawing rural environments on each occasion and his paintings reflect the simplicity of Japanese scroll paintings. Stuart is concerned with minimal mark making to create images of the Australian bush. In 2000 Stuart received an Australia Council New Work Grant and in 2002 he was awarded a fully funded residency at The Hill End Artists-in-Residence Program. Since 1969 Stuart has had over 24 solo exhibitions and exhibited in over 194 group exhibitions. In 2006 Stuart was awarded The Paul Guest Acquisitive Award from the Bendigo Art Gallery and in 2002 he won the Robert Jacks Drawing Prize. Stuart has also won the Glenfiddich Art Award (1979), Darnell de Gruchy Art Award (1977), Crouch Prize from the Ballarat Art Gallery (1967), the National Gallery of Victoria Drawing Prize (1965) and received an Australia Council Travel Grant (1977).Stuart’s work is extensively represented in collections throughout Australia, including the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Queensland Art Gallery, New Parliament House and Artbank.
