Biography
Joylene Haynes was born in 1942 at Port Lincoln, South Australia. She began her school life at Mt Hope before she was taken from her family at the age of seven and placed under State Government control for the next 11 years. Haynes worked as a nurse at Burra and Karoonda, South Australia before marrying and becoming the mother of five children. Haynes paints from the Ceduna Aboriginal Arts & Cultural Centre and through this association has exhibited in the 2006, 2007 and 2008 Our Mob exhibitions at the Adelaide Festival Centre. She exhibited her work in a group show at the Red Poles Gallery in Mclaren Vale in 2007. Her work was shortlisted in the 2008 Port Lincoln Art Prize and the South Australian Museum’s 2008 Waterhouse Art Prize.Haynes paints under the name “Minja Guddi” in honour of her mother who was the eldest of her clan group. When not painting, Haynes says in her artist statement on the Cultural Centre’s website, she attends “various meetings within the community and making bush medicines.” Writers: Allas, Tess Date written: 2009 Last updated: 2011
