Biography
Katety was born in Orbost in 1950. She grew up in New South Wales at the Cootamundra Girls Home and now resides in Sale. Katey’s work reflects her experience of the stolen generations, an experience from which Katey is seeking to heal herself. Recent work has been motivated by the national apology to the stolen generations. Katey studied art at Fulham TAFE in Sale where she learnt to appreciate and admire the work of Albert Namatjira. While always illustrating her connection to culture, Katey’s work in pastel, charcoal and paint reflects a love of story telling primarily from the old days. Much of Katey’s work depicts group scenes by the river after a hard day’s work picking as well as more generic images of unknown Aboriginal ancestors. Katey is the impetus for and facilitator of the Mix Up Aboriginal art group in Sale which she worked tirelessly to start. A critical and encouraging support to the Mix Up group, Katey was presented with a community contribution award from Ramahyuck District Aboriginal Corporation during NAIDOC 2007. Katey has exhibited extensively and had an acclaimed solo show at the Krowathunkoolong Keeping Place in Bairnsdale in 2002. Katey’s work and experience is moving and significant.
