Gail Mabo, dancer, actor and visual artist was born in Queensland in July 1965. Mabo studied dance at the Aboriginal and Islander Dance Theatre in Sydney from 1984 to 1987. Much of her career has been in the area of dance and choreography. She performed in Jimmy Chi’s Bran Nue Dae in its 1991 Sydney season and worked as a choreographer and dancer in Tracey Moffat 's 1986 short film Watch Out and as an actor in Moffat’s Nice Coloured Girls in 1985. Mabo is the daughter of celebrated land rights activist Eddie Mabo and in 2005 she directed the stage show KOIKI which was a performance based on the life of her father. In 2007 KOIKI toured to the Dreaming Festival in Woodford Queensland. Mabo added visual arts to her portfolio in 2004 when she began a Certificate IV in Visual Arts at the Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE. She completed this course in 2005 and immediately enrolled in a Diploma of Visual Arts at the same TAFE, graduating in 2007. Mabo has enjoyed immediate success as a visual artist and has been involved in many group exhibitions through the Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE and has also had two solo exhibitions in 2006 and 2007 at the Perc Tucker Regional Art Gallery in Townsville. She has held a number of successful solo exhibitions at the Perc Tucker Regional Art Gallery in Queensland and is also recognised as a successful dancer and choreographer who has worked with both Jimmy Chi and Tracey Moffatt.
