Description

Layer Warning:
Only corroborees that were recorded can be represented, such that these are often those witnessed by and/or performed for colonists and other audiences. Their distribution therefor reflects colonial presence rather than the distribution of corroborees.
Next evening the blacks of the district mustered to give an exhibition of a corroboree, and for the last time the streets of Melbourne were lit up to the leaping flame of their weird fires. Also - On 4 April when Lady Jane Franklin, the wife of the Governor of Van Diemen’s Land, visited Melbourne, she requested to see a corroboree, and Robinson asked the Woiwurrung and Boonwurrung to arrange one (Robinson Jnl 4/4/1839). This was staged at the Aboriginal encampment on the southbank of the Yarra River, one mile from the township.
