NameWA Journey Ways - The Snake Brothers Kalingiri (Albany)
Description

There are stories are about the formation of the modern coastline from around Australia. In Western Australia they typically describe a fight between freshwater and saltwater totems which results in the reshaping of the coastline. They were almost certainly constructed as narratives to remember the change in sea levels brought by the Holocene warming between 15,000 and 8,000 years ago.  This story tells not only of the harbour forming but also of the hills behind Albany becoming integrated into their lives as they moved there to be safe from the rising waters.

Description

ā€œA long time ago, this land was flat and there were no hills and the water was way, way out. Those two islands were two snakes that were guardians of the land. They were brothers, one island was the older brother and the other was the younger brother. The older brother used to teach the younger brother how to look after the land, make sure he knew what to do, make sure the waters were clean for the birds, make sure there was enough food around. Then in turn he would be fed. You see you look after the land and the land will feed you back.Ā But the young fellow wanted to play all day, play, play, play, then he would go and get food off the old brother. One day the older brother said; ā€˜no Iā€™ve had enough of you, you are not getting any more foodā€™. So the next day the older brother went around cleaning the water, looking after the birds, then he curled around the eggs, so he kept them to himself and went to sleep. The younger brother sneaked up, swallowed some of the eggs and as he grabbed the other eggs the older brother woke up. He couldnā€™t let him get away with that, so he flogged him, they fought and as they fought, they rolled around and round.ā€ - Carol PettersenĀ

Description

ā€œAs they rolled around they created the harbour and the hills. As they got to the new coastline the old people were concerned for they had never seen a fight like it, it went on for many days (usually they fight and it is over and done with). Because the fight was over food, they decided to give the snakes some food so they threw a camp dog to the snakes. The dog got bitten in half, thatā€™s the dog rock that you see, the tail is down the street.ā€ Carol PettersenĀ

Then all the water flowed in and created the harbour. When you look them you can see two snakes looking at you. The older brother is looking at you but the younger brother is ashamed and looking away.” - Carol Pettersen
