NameLelepa texts and recordings (2010)
DescriptionThis collection is organised around audio and video recordings from Lelepa, collected in 2010. Recordings include narratives (traditional, personal and historical), procedural texts (canoe making, gardening, cooking, hunting, fishing), recording of ceremonies (wedding, bestowing of title), discussions, public speeches, music (stringband) and elicitation (numerals). Recordings are associated with their transcription files (.eaf and .txt files) generated through Elan and Toolbox. Some recordings are also associated with pictures relating to the recording event.

Description

Four naluokia about birds told by Leitot Mal.Naluokia are traditional short stories illustrating a piece of traditional skill or knowledge as in the first naluaki or containing a moral as in the second and third ones. They function like parables and are/were used in church as β€œteachings”. They are also found in Nguna (Esther Philip, pers. comm.).

Two traditional stories with a moralistic content. The first is about people who say they do something but do something else. This is illustrated by the behavior of the fish called Pete which lives in brackish water. The second is about people who talk themselves up, and how this can end being troublesome for them.

Description

Opening of the Independence Day celebrations in Mangaliliu. The performance starts with a procession lead by men in traditional attire singing a traditional Lelepa song and taking the flag to the flagpole. The procession is closed by the children of Mangaliliu who sing the song as well. The song is about how whales slap the water with their fin as they jump out and back in the water. This is likely to symbolise the power and strength of the nation of Vanuatu. The procession arrives to the flagpole near the church. While the flag is raised, the people sing the National Vanuatu Anthem.
