NameLanguages of Southern New Guinea: Idi
DescriptionRecordings of the Idi language spoken in the Western Province of Papua New Guinea The Wellsprings of Linguistic Diversity was a five year Laureate project awarded by the Australian Research Council to Professor Nicholas Evans within the School of Culture, History and Language in the College of Asia and the Pacific, at the Australian National University. The project ran from 2014 to 2019. The project sought to address fundamental questions of linguistic diversity and disparity through an analysis of linguistic variation and change. The project addressed a crucial missing step in existing linguistic research by addressing the question of what drives linguistic diversification so much faster in some societies than in others. It did so by undertaking intensive, matched case studies of speech communities across Australia and the Pacific, allowing researchers to detect variations in languages as they occur and compare the amounts and types of variation found in different sorts of settings, with a particular focus on small-scale multilingual speech communities. It aimed to generate an integrated model of language variation and change, building in interactions between social and linguistic processes. The research findings offered insights into the enormous diversity of human experience, vital for fields as diverse as cognitive science, human evolutionary biology, anthropology and archaeology.

Description

Language: Idi Date Recorded: 1985 Location Recorded: Malenka Subject: Customary land demarcation. Verbal record of traditional custodian of land (pre-colonial). Contents: There are 4 recordings in this set, sides A & B of two cassettes. In 1A/B is the subject of the metadata above; cassette 2A/B might be as well. Notes: 1A/B is an edited version of 2A/B. On 2A, a recording of Johnny Cash singing Sister Rosetta Tharpe's "Strange Things Happening Every Day" can be heard during the mic test, either as the sound test material or as pre-existing recording on the tape. This seems to be the work of two Idi speakers- one who is running the 'session' and the other who is providing a monologue. 2B begins with cool girl rock music for the mic check before switching to a radio broadcast (radio PNG?) for only about 5 minutes; the rest of the tape is music, probably a recording made earlier.
