Description

Track A starts out with speaker listing his marko (market?) transactions (researcher explains this at 7m35) There is some Tok Pisin between the narratives/discussions. [Image of box metadata for Side 2 seems to match better with track A]. On track B, (Andy Pawley or Ralph Bulmer) introduces Minyas who then reads a sinju that is written out. At 19m05s (Andy Pawley or Ralph Bulmer) introduces speaker Minyas' [Minihas?] second long sinju. [Image of box metadata of side 1 seems to match better with track B]. Metadata on box is difficult to read. There is more information on the tasks throughout the recordings.

At 15m30s (Andy Pawley or Ralph Bulmer) and speaker converse in Kalam (and Tok Pisin?), possibly discussing narrative that follows. Narrative may be about spells (indicated by tape box metadata). At 22m555s begins the elicitation of Kinship terms Track B (Andy Pawley or Ralph Bulmer) eliciting linguistic/sociological data with speakers in Tok Pisin and Kalam. At 3m33s He clarifies a point made by speaker about 'reveal' versus 'show'. At the end of track B (Andy Pawley or Ralph Bulmer) mentions that the speakers had provided him with the information he missed from a previous elicitation session with speaker Maembu using sociological cards during which 8-9 cards were passed over. Metadata on box is difficult to read.

Reel 21 Side A: Smi at Grkek: Bulmer & Pawley Side B: Smi at Grkek (Blm) Both sides contain recordings of a traditional dance performance by mostly male dancers. This appears to be a cultural celebration lasting through the night with performers and audiences from different villages. At the end of track B (31m27s), Andy Pawley explains that at about 5.50am, those visitors who have received pork will stay a bit longer, the others are starting to pack up. Recorded 21-22/09/1963
